Harlan Ellison once wrote that writing is "creative lying",
Harlan Ellison also once said to me, in person, that a fool who writes
shit can
be one of the more amusing creatures around. said this to me the weekend
of July
4th, 1984, in Portland, Oregon. though we both had had a few drinks at the

Nice little story, if it's true...

True... I once had a cool dream back around 1989, that it turned out Harlan
Ellison was living around the corner from me... then I found that he did
actually spend some time here in the 1950s, in bootcamp at Fort Darkness.

I hate Harlan Ellison for three
characters he stuck in my head that won't
go away and who almost never shut-up.
Harlequin, the Tick-Tock man
and Raoul-Mitgong.
Mainly, Mitgong. I've tried for years
to get him into a story of mine but so
far the only thing I've been able to get
him to do is narrate.
He's useless!
-blue
i love him for "Lonely Ache" and One Life Furnished in Early Poverty".
oh, and the whole collection of his short stories in the book Approaching
Tomorrow. cool stuff.... crazy guy.
but who isn't?
In the late 1980s, I managed to collect a complete Ellison paperback
collection, several with different cover art, through used bookstore in
Atlanta. I enjoy his columns and essays the most. "With An Edge In My Voice"
was one Hell of an entertaining column, as was "Glass Teat".

happened to be the GOH and I remember vividly how heavy a drinker he
was. He was really going through Perrier like it was water.

if you're going to lie, the lie needs to be somewhat plausible, you know?
why must i ALWAYS be the one who points this fact out?
And who better to teach how to properly lie than you, JRS? BTW, I recieved a
copy of Harlan Ellison's book "City On The Edge Of Forever" a couple of days
ago, and there's a section where he states that he doesn't drink, and has
*never* drank... leading us to assume that your story of meeting Ellison in
1984, and having drinks with him is a... lie. Whic is obvious to those of us

he had a drink in his hand, as i've said. i believe he was intoxicated on
something, regardless of what he wrote in his book. but, in all honesty i was
quite drunk myself, so i am willing to admit i wasn't 100% sure about all events
of that evening.
[from "City On The Edge Of Forever", page 72]:

"What's wrong is that I don't drink.
I have never drunk.
Can'r stand the taste of alchohol, it makes me sick. As a
consequence, I have no tolerance for alchohol of any kind. I do not
drink beer, wine, hard liquor. I also don't use drugs, but that's
another matter."
-Harlan Ellison.
oh, i'm also sure i threw a wine glass from the top of the Marriots in Portland
to the roof of a building across the street, at around 3am. that i remember. it
was a foolish male youthful moment.
but contrary to popular opinion, on that same weekend i did NOT say to Larry
Niven that he was a "lousy" writer. this embellishment has followed me for
almost 20 years, and i wish to state now, in public that i did not say Larry
Niven was a lousy writer to his face.
i think i might have said it to some chick he wanted to fuck, and it's possible
that she told him, but i said no such thing to his face.

Of course, the amusing thing is that I, too, was at that party at the

Yeah... and he got drunk with Harlan Ellison, who never drinks. Perhaps
Sherman's memory is foggy after 19 years.
Otherwise, he's a lying backstabber, based upon his own words...

Feminists need not necessarily be female. What's interesting is
that Wormword uses a slightly less derogatory word to refer
to women himself, unless he was saying only females aged
1-18 are referred to as chicks.
